FAQ

RGB & RGBW questions

Can RGB LED strip make white light?

Technically yes, but RGB-mixed white is a cool, tinted blend with poor color rendering. For functional white lighting, specify RGBW or RGBCW — the dedicated white chip delivers true white at Ra≥90. RGB-only strip is best reserved for pure color scenes.

What is the difference between RGB and RGBW?

RGBW adds a fourth, dedicated white chip to the red, green, and blue emitters. That fourth channel produces true white at CRI 90+ instead of a tinted RGB blend. Installations that alternate between color scenes and everyday white lighting should always spec RGBW or RGBCW.

Read the RGB vs RGBW vs RGB+CCT guide

Should I choose 12V or 24V RGB strip?

24V for most installations: it halves the current for the same wattage, so wire and connectors carry less and colors stay even along the run. 12V suits short accents and systems that already run on 12V. The 5V COB RGB series is for short detail runs up to 6.5 ft (2 m).

Why long RGB runs turn pink

How do I cut RGB LED strip?

Cut only at the marked points, straight across the printed line. Cut units range from 0.82 in (20.83 mm) on 5V COB RGB to 3.94 in (100 mm) on 5050 RGB — check the spec table for each model. Use 4-, 5-, or 6-pin connectors matched to the color configuration when rejoining.

Do I need a controller — and which one?

Yes — every color-changing strip needs a controller matched to its channel count: 3 channels (4 pins) for RGB, 4 channels (5 pins) for RGBW and RGBCW, 5 channels (6 pins) for RGBWW and RGB+CCT. We pair the controller and driver at quote time from our Drivers, Controllers & Connectors line.

How do I size the power supply for RGBW strip?

Use the W/ft in the spec table, which is the figure with every channel at full output, multiply by the run length, and keep the load at or below 80% of the driver's rating. Each run still follows the table's max run per feed.

Read the power supply sizing guide

Is waterproof RGB strip available?

Yes — RGB and RGBW configurations are available in IP65–IP68 constructions through our Outdoor & Waterproof line. The strip, connectors, and driver are specified together as one system, and the wet location marking is confirmed per model at quote.
